George's World Tour South of Stoke - Day 10
I had a terrible night's sleep last night. I felt like I woke up about every 20 minutes. One time when I woke up there was the most amazing sunrise outside but I was too grumpy to take a photo of it. And another time, Claire was outside fiddling with the guy lines on the canopy, making them so tight they were making similar noises to guitar strings. Apparently something was tapping.
When I eventually got up my back was hurting so much I couldn't put my socks on. Fortunately, after some stretches, ibuprofen and bagels it got a lot better and I was able to put my socks and trainers on.
I've spent most of the day with a headache feeling tired and grumpy. Before anyone starts jumping to conclusions, this was down to the bad sleep and lingering back ache and not by over indulging in beer the previous night.
Our main objective today was to have our first cream tea of the holiday. Claire was like a cat on a hot tin roof about it and was on the lookout from the minute we left the campsite. I soon realised that a mid afternoon cream tea would be too late for her, so we ended up stopping in Brixham at about lunchtime for one instead, this being the first place we'd come across that seemed to meet our criteria (easy and not too expensive to park George, and not in the dodgy end of town).
We settled on a little cafe called Tiffany's, which was full of pictures of Audrey Hepburn, and indecisive pensioners who couldn't work their iPhones. I was close to the end of my tether by the time our scones arrived. I always like to give cream teas marks out of 10, and unfortunately this one only gets 4/10. Neither the scones, jam or cream were above average and there wasn't really enough tea. But on the positive side, it is almost a dead cert that our next one will be better.
After that, we caught the ferry over the river to Dartmouth and started looking for somewhere we could stop for the night. We were surprised to find a lovely, free overnight spot in a National Trust car park a mile or two out of Stoke Fleming. I had a bowl of cereal and a nap and felt a bit better afterwards.
I am pleased to tell you that we have booked onto a half day sea kayaking trip from Dartmouth tomorrow, so hopefully the blog will be more interesting and less grumpy.
