Blue Monday

Monday 16th January 2017

Club la Santa, Lanzarote

According to some depressing post on Facebook this morning, today is supposed to be the most depressing day in the year, hence the name Blue Monday. The only things that have been blue for us have been the sky and the sea. Oh, and the steaks we had for dinner came close.

We started the morning off with an intermediate front crawl lesson in one of the pools, which was excellent apart from a man changing his pants in full view of everyone at the side. There were about 8 of us in the group, 50:50 women and men. I felt quite smug as I think I was the fastest swimmer there. The lesson lasted 50 minutes, and I picked up a few areas where I think I can definitely improve. Like actually bothering to kick my legs, and my "catch" and "push" when my hand is in the water. The next step is to video each other swimming so we can actually see for ourselves what our stroke looks like.

After swimming we had a quick banana and then went down to the lagoon for some more kayak practice, this time with my new GoPro action camera attached to me. The camera is voice activated and I took loads of photos, quite a lot of which were of my own legs, but some of which turned out OK. We only did a couple of laps because we were really hungry and had to go in for lunch.

At 3:30pm we had a stand up paddleboard (SUP) lesson booked. We did SUP a couple of years ago, when Claire was annoyed to find that I was a lot better than her. Today, it was first come first served for the beginners boards, and needless to say, Claire managed to get one and I ended up with an intermediate board. We both managed to stand upright before too long, and neither of us fell in (although it was close). Claire's performance was a a lot better than last time, and mine a lot worse (my legs felt like what I think a new born giraffe's must do). Until I managed to persuade her to swap boards after which I felt a lot better. We're probably not going to bother with another go at SUP, but we have booked onto a beginners windsurfing lesson in a couple of days instead.

This evening we had dinner in one of the restaurants on site. We both had steaks, and were given the choice between medium or well done. We ordered medium, because that's what we normally have (or sometimes medium rare), but while we were waiting we started wondering if we'd only been given two options due to being British (stereotypical well done), or whether the steak cooking categories are different in Lanzarote. It turned out to be the latter, as I would describe my steak as rare, and Claire's as bordering on blue. Fortunately we were ok with that so they didn't go to waste or have to be sent back.

Tomorrow we are off out at 8:30am for the sea dive trip! I'm a bit nervous about it but excited too, and am still holding out some hope of seeing some dolphins and turtles.
