France
Claire was taking up far too much space in George's (quite narrow) bed last night and I woke up several times during the night, squashed against the side. So when I woke at 7.55am I was quite glad the alarm was about to go off and I could get up and have some space.
I was about to head straight down to the boulangerie, until it occurred me that it might not be open yet! So I did a quick kettlebell workout behind the awning instead. It is not the first time I have brought kettlebells away with us in George, but it is the first time I have used them more than once. They were invaluable yesterday when we were pitching the awning and realised we'd forgotten the mallet, so now they've been used two days in a row!
During my workout this morning, I caught 4 mosquitos in the act of sucking my blood. They all came to a sticky end, but not before injecting enough of the stuff that makes you itch like crazy under my skin to make me, well, itch like crazy. I realised after the fourth one that there was a breeze round the other side of the awning and hence no mosquitos there, but I ended up cutting my workout a bit short due to blood loss.
After that I cycled into the village to get the all important croissants, pain au chocolate and a baguette. I'm definitely getting better at this French lark, as there were about 5 different types of baguette and I wasn't phased a bit. Tomorrow I'm going to pluck up courage to ask for almond croissants.
When I returned, Claire was still in bed! I told her I was going for a shower and gave her a stern look, and when I got back she was up and dressed, and George was set up ready for breakfast not bed. I think the smell of the croissants may have helped her along a bit.
After breakfast we went out on the bikes round the coast. The roads were pretty quiet, and led to lots of nice little beaches, rocky coves and a very strange little house sandwiched between two huge rocks. We got told off by two French ladies for riding our bikes down a temptingly wide path that was for pedestrians only. They had to use the universal language of pointing at the bikes, shaking their heads and waggling their fingers at us. We spent a while sitting admiring the view and then set off again into the main village of Plougrescant to have a look round.
We soon realised there wasn't much there apart from the boulangerie, a chemist, two churches (one of which had a a strange crooked steeple), and a quaint little restaurant.
Due to some confusion over opening hours and days of the week, we ended up having an early lunch there because we thought it was going to close at 1pm. Claire had a big bowl full of mussels and I had a seafood version of a ploughmans. Both were good, as was the beer we washed them down with. When we left at 1.30pm the restaurant was still open and I'd remembered that Vendredi means Friday not Wednesday.
After lunch we tried to sit on a beach for a while and read, but it had clouded over and gone a bit windy so we were too cold. We retreated to George for an hour, and then went for a run (!) followed by another kettlebell workout, which Claire was forced to take part in.
We've had a nice dinner of salami, cheeses and baguette and are now coming to the end of a €3.90 bottle of wine which is surprisingly good. I'm wearing long trousers and a long sleeved top zipped right up to try and keep any sneaky mosquitos at bay. Shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted springs to mind, but I could really do without any more bites.
Tomorrow we're moving on to the Crozon peninsula, where we have our eye on a particularly nice looking campsite. We are nearly out of food, and completely out of wine and beer (!) so will be calling in at a supermarket on the way to top up essential supplies.
